Culture Trip – the travel website and app for booking hand-picked places to stay and experiences – has seen a huge surge of interest in Portugal with searches up 162%* after the country was added to the government’s green travel list.
With many travellers now off to the southern European country, Culture Trip is revealing the places in Portugal that are most popular right now and also the lesser known destinations for those looking for a bit of peace and quiet.
Hands down the most popular Portuguese destination being searched for is Lisbon which in the last 10 days has surged in popularity seeing a 65%* increase in interest. Porto and Albufeira place second and third respectively.
The top 8 most popular Portuguese destinations:
- Lisbon
- Porto
- Albufeira
- Sintra
- Funchal (Madeira)
- Coimbra
- Faro
- Lagos
Those looking to explore Portugal but want to avoid the big crowds should look into some of the least researched destinations such as Figueira da Foz – the city at the mouth of the Mondego River – with its abundance of sun and sandy beaches. Also still overlooked right now based on the Culture Trip data is Olhão which is one of south Portugal’s most peaceful destinations boasting islands with beautiful beaches.
Culture Trip still has availability in both the popular as well as the lesser known Portugal destinations: places to stay in Lisbon or Porto can be booked from £35 (one night for 2 in a double room) and experiences such as a boat tour of the Faro Islands from £27 per person.
When it comes to getting away, Culture Trip polled Brits** on what they want to experience while on holiday with the top results focusing on outdoor experiences and the natural wonder of a location – all of which can be found in Portugal. The experience most being looked forward to is finding natural wonders such as waterfalls, lonely beaches and remote valleys showing that Brits are looking to embrace the big outdoors after being in lockdown for so long.
The top 5 most anticipated local travel experiences:
- Finding local natural wonders like waterfalls, lonely beaches, remote valleys etc.
- Nature walks / hiking
- Seeing your destination at sunrise / sunset / at night
- Getting up close to local wildlife in its natural habitat
- Visiting a well-known sight but in an unusual way (for example at a time when nobody else has access)
Darren Carbine, Chief Travel Officer at Culture Trip said “With Portugal one of the few destinations on the green travel list, the country’s popularity is no surprise. There are much loved cities that are top of mind for travellers such as Lisbon and Porto but we also have identified some lesser known places which still seem a bit under the radar for Brits but really are worth exploring. At Culture Trip, we still have availability for places to stay and for experiences in Portugal for all those who can’t wait to visit this beautiful country”.
Culture Trip is offering a Covid Booking Guarantee to reassure its customers and make them feel confident about their booking.
